BUAFL Predict-O-Matics MVP Game Prediction

Northern Allstars v Southern Allstars

As you may know by now the Predict-o-Matic doesn't care much for what the squishy brained people predict - their processors simply can't compute the same way a computer can. However i think i run the risk of being called predictable in choosing the outcome of this game.

The North have once more assembled a fantastic squad with a great chance of winning. However my sources tell me they're not turning up to training and this is especially true of some of their key players. It isn't a clever move as the team risks not gelling as a unit before the big game. The North have a great stable of running backs and, perhaps controversially, I think will hold the advantage in this department. Most of their backs are used to making hard yards without the benefits of great blocks so it makes sense that with an all star line they should excel. Having said that the South may well benefit from a better executed run game as my readouts are telling me the Southern Oline is superior overall.

Defensive line wise im speaking from experience when i say i'm convinced the Norths Dline holds the upper hand. Having observed the best both Dlines have to offer the North are better athletes with both a size and speed advantage. They match up well with the South's Oline and this could turn out to be the key battle in deciding the outcome in this matchup. Can the Northern Dline dominate like they did last year?

Where the South pulls away from the North is in the QB and DB units. The WRs feel evenly matched, despite the North having a bigger pool to pick from. Both Varney and Boyle from the South are able to make all the throws but can also hand off!!!! (in case you ask, I have had a GeFOrce sarcasm graphics card installed). Unless the rain hits Birmingham this weekend I can see Varney and co airing it out and scoring big.

It's for this reason I think the South will pull away. The Northern run game is solid and more than capable but its the Southern offence that's a threat to score every time it lines up on the LOS.

The Predict-o-Matic is going for a 31-14 Southern victory.

BUAFL Announces 2008/09 League MVPs

On Tuesday 14th April the British University American Football League announced its 2008/09 BUAFL MVPs. Abandoning last years format of choosing defensive and offensive MVPs for both North and South, BUAFL named just 2 league wide MVPs this time around.

BUAFL Blog Birmingham Lions Tristan VarneyIn the offensive category it was unsurprising to see Lion's quarterback Tristan Varney come away with the award. The rookie sensation marshalled the leagues top ranked offence, piling up gaudy stats and leading Birmingham to an undefeated season and the BUAFL National Title. Its scary to think that Varney has achieved all this in just his first BUAFL season. He will undoubtedly be following in the footsteps of Ed Goka next year as the player everyone will be watching in his sophomore campaign. BUAFL is a league where quality Quarterback's are like gold dust and Birmingham seem to have hit the jackpot. Look for the Lions to be Title contenders as long as Varney's at the helm. Read Tristan Varney's BUAFL profile and stats here.

BUAFL Blog BUAFL MVP Southampton Stag Ed ButcherThe Southampton Stag's Ed Butcher claimed the defensive MVP award. Butcher had an outstanding season terrorising opposition quarterbacks, wracking up sacks and hurries. The son of Soccer legend Terry Butcher, Ed decided to make his mark on the gridiron as opposed to the soccer pitch and has emerged as a playmaker in a talented Stags defense. At over 6'4'' with great instincts he is a force to be reckoned. Few teams have been able to contain this monster and he has simply overwhelmed lesser linemen. As one of the leaders in the Stag's program he also contributed as a receiver as well as on special teams on route to Southampton's Southern Final appearance. See Ed Butcher's BUAFL profile and stats here.

BUAFL Results: National Championship Final

BUAFL National Championship Final

Birmingham Lions (12-0) 42 vs Newcastle Raiders (11-1) 2

As the smoke cleared on Sunday evening it was the Birmingham Lions who emerged victorious, claiming the 2008/09 BUAFL National Championship Title. The Lions proved too much for the Newcastle Raiders as they cruised to a comprehensive win. Their potent offence wasn't phased by the occasion or impressive record of the Raiders D, as they ate up yardage through both the the arm of rookie sensation Tristan Varney and running of Bowl MVP Mark Smith, on route to 6 touchdowns. Newcastle's methodical Double Wing struggled to keep the Raiders in touch as the well matched up Lions defence sought to do what it does best and shut down the run. The Raiders broke their scoring deadlock by returning a blocked extra point in the 4th Quarter, a testament to the fact that they kept fighting right up to the final whistle. It marks an impressive finale to the season for this unbeaten Lion's squad and especially Head Coach Tony Athersmith who has now brought the National Title back to Birmingham in only his second season in charge.

With this victory the South's Championship winning streak is further extended and a Southern team has now claimed the previous 6 National Titles. The North's last victory came back in 2003 when the Clansmen edged the 'Canes 22-17. Look for the North to try and win back some pride in the MVP game in a few weeks time.

Well the Predict-O-Matic backed the right horse in this (Grand) National Championship (as well as our guest predictor The All Seeing I) although was off with the scoreline as well as his pick for MVP, which went to Brum running back Mark Smith. As the season reaches its end we break down the 'Matic's record:

National Championship: 1-0 (100%)
Challenge Trophy Final: 1-0 (100%)
Playoffs: 15-1 (94%)
Regular Season: 60-10 (85%)

Total: 72-11 (87%)

I think we can safely say it was a successful year for the 'Matic and its not over yet as it will be back to make its pick for the BUAFL MVP game. Indeed although this was the final game of the BUAFL season we've still got lots to come here at the BUAFL Blog. We'll be rounding things off with some great articles including extensive coverage of the BUAFL MVP game as well as handing out some end of season awards. Watch this space.

BUAFL National Championship Guest Prediction: The All Seeing I

Newcastle Raiders (11-0) v Birmingham Lions (11-0)

The All Seeing I

Running the Double wing is the equivalent of sitting in front of your TV on Christmas Morning 1994, playing on your brand new NES, with the Duck Hunt cartridge inserted, and the lazer gun in your sweaty mits. After getting frustrated with the game on level 12, you sidle up to the TV, and point the gun 1 inch from the TV screen. Before you know it, you’re at level 50, and have very sore eyes… Ultimately, It’s not cheating, but there’s something not quite right about it.

Double Wing is the Smack of British Football – your friends and family will tell you not to get into it, your girlfriend will cry herself to sleep worrying about you, counselors will warn you that it’s addictive and dangerous. They’ll try and force you to rehab, and point the way to a West-Coast Scheme, even run and gun. As a last resort the offer you the methadone kick of Triple Option. They’ll all tell you that you’re becoming a football pariah and a social exile, yet you don’t care… It makes you feel invincible, feel powerful, feel loved…

The Birmingham Lions have crushed all before them; behind the arm of Tristan Varney and the endless clichés of Coach Athersmith (yeah?), the Lions have cruised to an unbeaten record, swiping even the mightily of their perches. If the Double Wing is Smack, then the Birmingham Air Raid is Cocaine - it fills you with bravado and arrogance, you feel popular, almost messianic, when in reality everyone is slowly deleting you from their phone books, and removing you from facebook. Does that sound familiar Lions?

Now, they’re at the Championship Game (or the CHamPionSiP GaMe for the xpLosION crowd) with the chance to win only their second ever title. For a team full of bluster, they’ve consistently underachieved – this is their chance to be the once bullied kid to get their own back on the big, bad league. None more than angry dwarf Richard (call me RJ) Stockdale – for years derided as a half-man, half-Lego brick, labouring away in Hull-on-Earth – he now has a chance with the big boys (well everyone’s bigger than him) to get his shot at immortality.

So, in this match up, we have the archetypal contradiction in terms - a perfectly likeable team, made truly unlikable by a 'running scrum' offense, against a contemptible team, made all the much more bearable by the way they play football. It's not about North and South anymore, it's about what side your bread is buttered.

So, let’s break this down.

Birmingham can seemingly score at will, until they come up against an all-pro defense - they didn't exactly struggle against Southampton, but they didn't torch them for 100+ points (take a bow Barracuda). Similarly, Newcastle looks good against poor-to-average defenses, but don't find the going quite as easy against better drilled outfits.

Yes the Air Raid is wide open and high octane, but the Double Wing has poked more holes into opposition defenses, than Coach Johnson has in his Johnson. It's brutally effective, in rolling over teams who aren't savvy enough, and still hard-nosed enough to get at least 3 yards a carry against decent opposition who have scouted the bejesus out of it. Look at the Aces - they stopped Goka, but couldn't stop the endless waves of Raiders sustaining drives on 4th and short.

This MIGHT be decided at the coin toss - Birmingham win, and they torch Newcastle, it might force them to force the issue on 4th and short. Stopping them there could (and probably would) result in another Lions score. At 12 points down, the Raiders would have to do something different, and the pressure would be on.

If the Raiders win the toss, the pressure would be off, and they could valuable time off the clock, marching down, accruing 3 yards a carry, and putting points on the board. The best that Birmingham could do, would be to equal the score. Thus it continues until one team makes a mistake.

Yes the Lions have a great defense, but you can have the best defense in the world, it doesn't mean that you can stop the wing. The beauty of it is that you can get more people at the point of attack than defenders - unless that defender is Ray Lewis, which means they’ll get what they need over 4 downs.

This is going to be closer than people give it credit for - it'll be tight at the half, before the Lions pull away. I'm going for a 34-16 Lions win, and for the crowd to leave Leeds with the kind of same kind of soulless, listless feeling you get after watching disturbing porn.

BUAFL Predict-O-Matic's National Championship Prediction

Newcastle Raiders (11-0) v Birmingham Lions (11-0)

So here we are. The 2 teams I predicted at the start to make it all the way have fulfilled the prophecy, and I will follow my initial gut feeling picking the Birmingham Lions to walk away with the Bowl. Here's why:

Coaching - Both teams have great coaching setups. Birmingham's Tony Athersmith is following in the footsteps of some great coaches, including most obviously those of Bowl winning HC Wayne Hill, now part of his staff. Athersmith has clearly already made his own mark by leading the Lions to the National Championship in just his second year.

Newcastle have a Head Coach in the form of Ben Johnson who's reputation continues to grow with each passing season. The Raiders were always a solid team in he North, but under his guidance they've become one of the 4 Northern powerhouses. Even after the departure of Coach Evans the Newcastle defence still proved dominated in their conference, and have carried this form throughout he playoffs. On coaching the finalists feel pretty even, with Birmingham perhaps ahead by a nose.

Offence - There are just 2 words to describe the offences of these teams "Polar opposites". Birmingham have the mind blowing Spread offence. Newcastle have the mind melting Double Wing. Neither has really been stopped this year, and both have overwhelmed their opponents physically and mentally. Even with all their injury worries, Newcastle still racked up an average of 41 points a game. Birmingham eclipsed that with a whopping 62 points a game, though the Predict-o-matic feels that stat line has been embellished by some merciless scorelines such as the 117-0 dismantling of Bristol. Either way it demonstrates that the Birmingham offence have ruthless streak. Before last weekend I would have said the Newcastle defence wouldn't stand a chance. But after seeing how the Raiders held a strong Loughborough offence to just 2 TDs, my circuits are not so sure.

Newcastle just keep scoring. The threat with their offence isn't so much that they will put the game out of sight early. Instead it's the persistent hammering away and eating up of time and ground that wears teams down, leading to scores long into the 3rd and 4th quarters. Their superior fitness and execution has proved decisive this season and along with the Double Wing's infallibility to horrible, hurricane conditions means I feel the Newcastle offence has the edge.

Defence - Between them, these defences have allowed just 6 TDs all season and recorded 12 shutouts in 15 games. Their both used to dominating their opponents which only adds to the intrigue of this matchup. Birmingham have actually faced the double wing already this season in the form of an inexperienced BNU side. But no offense to the new boys, Birmingham needn't bother consulting the video. Comparing the Newcastle Wing to the BNU Wing is the equivalent of comparing a Mac to a Macintosh 128k just because they are made by the same people. The best example Birmingham can really learn from is Loughborough's performance against the Raiders on Sunday. The Aces managed to shut down the Double Wing for 3 quarters. The Lion's defensive line are the key and they have experience and speed, which are both necessary to beat the wing. Add this to the fact that their linebackers and safeties are not satisfied unless they have decapitated their opponents and you have a fearsome defence built to stop running games cold.

Newcastle's defence have a combination of speed and aggression all over the field. There's some big guys on the line who are backed up by a vastly experience linebacking core. However with the low point of this season being the 10 points they allowed against Glasgow this is a defence that may not know how to react if they go down by a couple of scores. This, I feel, will be vital in determining the games outcome: can the Newcastle D keep their heads high against an offence that they've never faced, is so well executed and will certainly score points? I give this one to Birmingham on the premise that they have already managed to hold 4 playoffs teams to just 47 points which includes last years National Champions Southampton.

In summary I feel this game will be close, but Birmingham will have it by the final whistle. This will not be the blowout most people suspect. The Predict-o-matic truly believes there will be a lot more double wing fans come Monday morning!

The 'Matic Bowl MVP: Lions QB Tristan Varney

Predicted score: Birmingham Lions 28 - Newcastle Raiders 14

It's been a pleasure giving an insight into my motherboard this BUAFL season and I will be back next year. I'm getting my RAM upgraded in the offseason to match that of Blue Gene/L so maybe I'll aim for a 100% record next time around.

Though not to disappoint - I will cancel my engineers for the MVP game to predict who will come out on top.

BUAFL Blog Announces Development Of Virtual Reality Platform For British University American Football

BUAFL Blog Virtual Reality Platform
BUAFL Blog have announced the development of an online Virtual Reality platform for British University American Football. What this could soon mean is that BUAFL Teams will never again have to play games against each other in person. The platform is believed to be between 0% and 100% complete.

In this VR platform BUAFL teams will be able to design their kit, suit up and then go head to head with their opponents in cyberspace, all from the comfort of each players own grimey student digs. The virtual reality platform is expected to deliver the full BUAFL experience including real time fist fights, empty stadiums, fugly cheerleaders, unplayable pitches and really bad ref crews.

Mr B. Blogger elaborated on the thinking behind the project: "British University American Football is played by students. By definition students don't want drag themselves out of bed on a Sunday and travel hours with a hangover to exert themselves in the cold and mud. They would rather be sleeping, drinking or playing computer games. This is why we decided to develop this platform and why we will be including features such as the "Snooze", "Hangover Autopilot" and "Update My Facebook/Twitter status" options."

BUAFL Blog Virtual Reality PlatformMr Blogger goes on to talk a little more about how it will work: "The success and popularity of the online game Goal Line Blitz among BUAFL players and fans has inspired us to adopt a spam based development system. In this way players and teams will be able to improve their stats and skills by mercilessly harassing each other with links to their website. We hope this will start all the teams on an even playing field so we can finally decided if the North or the South is better. Having said that some teams in remote parts of the country are yet to have electricity, let alone the internet, which may be a problem"

Talking about the launch of the system Nationwide Mr Blogger commented "Although its certainly unrealistic to say that the system will be in place by next season, by 2010/2011 i fully expect every BUAFL game to be played in the BUAFL Blog VR suite. It is of course important that we reduce the current cost of each headset from £500,000 to a more student friendly price in order to facilitate this". He finished by saying "In this new Digital world the BUAFL Blog VR Suit is the future of the game". BUAFL Chief Exec Andy Fuller was not immediately available for comment.

BUAFL Results: Week 17

North

Northern Final: Loughborough Aces (8-3) 14 @ Newcastle Raiders (11-0) 30

Only a single fixture in BUAFL week 17 but with a place in the Bowl at stake it doesn't really get more important than this. The Northern Final promised to provide a great contest between the red hot Loughborough Aces and a dominant but perhaps untested Newcastle Raiders side. It lived up to its billing with the game going all the way to the wire after the 4th quarter started 14-14. It was the Raiders who prevailed however, punching in two late touchdowns to leave the final score slightly flattering. With the win Newcastle claim the Northern Title, finally banishing the ghosts of last years loss to Staffs in the same fixture. They now march on to face the Birmingham Lion in Leeds in what should be a fascinating clash of tough defences and contrasting offensive styles.

Just one to call for the Predict-O-Matic:

Overall: 1-0 (100%)

1 of 1 and the 'Matic can breath a sigh of relief. Only the big game remains and the 'Matic will be determined to build on his solid playoff percentage and finish the season on a high. The BUAFL Blog poll currently stands 60% favour of the Lions to win, check back later this week to see if the Predict-O-Matic agrees!

BUAFL Predict-O-Matic's Week 17 Predictions

Loughborough Aces (8-2) @ Newcastle Raiders (10-0)

So it's down to the final 2 teams in the North. Nobody should be shocked to see these sides vying for a shot at the bowl, considering both their recent histories of success. I personally couldn't see the Aces beating a solid Stallions side and have paid the price with my 100% playoff record. Loughborough showed class and a hell of a lot of guts to see them through to this matchup. Perhaps most impressively they held stud RB Ed Goka to under 3 yards a carry. But the Raiders are a different kettle of fish and the question remains can the Aces replicate this success against Newcastle's potent and frustrating wing Offence.

On paper everyone should know how to stop the wing. It's teaching and drilling into players not bite until you locate the ball, to look for pulling lineman, keeping lower than normal in the middle and so on. I'm sure the Aces will know the theory of how to stop that explosive Newcastle offence, but if they decided to implement it will they be able to implement it in time? Another factor is the adjustments made by both teams. Newcastle are used to having their base offence slowed or shut down by the time the 2nd or 3rd quarter rolls around. Their strength lies in the adjustment they make on the fly, these are the changes that simply nullify defences. The bottom line is that almost every defence Newcastle have faced this season they've trumped.

So what the Predict-o-matic is trying to compute is whether the Loughborough coaches will try and implement a new run stop scheme adjusted to match the wing? Or simply stick with the set-up they are comfortable with and that worked so effectively against the vaulted Staffs run game?

Newcastle's defence was as stingy as ever last week. According to my robo-scout the Pyro's scores, though no doubt deserved, came late in the final quarter when the Raiders were playing 2nd and 3rd stringers. Therefore to my processor the game was as good as a shut-out. Loughborough's offence, on the other hand, surprised me, sustaining and finishing drives for so many scores against a solid defence. The Raiders are struggling for depth at the moment due to some unfortunate injuries which will come into play if this game goes to the line. But if the Raiders are as physically fit as all Coach Johnson's teams seem to be I can see them pulling through. However if the long season has finally caught up with them look for Loughborough to gain the upper hand.

In the end, perhaps inevitably, im going to say this will be a close game. But remember the Raiders will determined not to let another chance at the bowl slip through their finger after falling at the penultimate hurdle last year. This may well be the edge they need.

BUAFL Results: Week 16

North

Conference Final: UWS Pyros (8-1-1) 12 @ Newcastle Raiders (10-0) 50
Conference Final: Loughborough Aces (8-2) 26 @ Staffordshire Stallions (9-1) 24

South

Southern Final: Southampton Stags (9-2) 7 @ Birmingham Lions (11-0) 13

Challenge Trophy Final

Challenge Trophy Final: Sheffield Hallam Warriors (7-3) 8 vs Bath Killer Bees (7-3) 13

Well BUAFL Week 16 certainly lived up to the hype as the season reaches its crescendo.....That started with many peoples game of the week, with last years Champions the Stags making the trip to face the unbeaten Lions. What it lacked in points it made up for with drama as Birmingham held off a late Stags surge to book their place in the Bowl. The Lions now have and extra week of preparation and well deserved rest which may only add weight to their label as favourites to take the Title home.....The Conference 2 Final was even closer as the visiting Aces won by just 2 points against the Stallions at the Stables. It was a dramatic turn around from their 31 - 8 loss to Staffs earlier in the year and a testament to the strong vein of form Loughborough have hit as it comes to the business end of the season. The Aces are red hot right now and primed for what should be a scorching Northern Final.....The Raiders refused to conform this week, bucking the trend of close games by putting 50 on a weary Pyros team. Its hard to gauge exactly where they are in terms of form right now after whats arguably been a soft late regular season and post season schedule. What certainly wont be in any doubt is their desire to get a shot at the Bowl after coming so close last year.....Finally, Bath wrote their names in the history books by winning the inaugural BUAFL Challenge Trophy after a hard fought victory against the Warriors. It leaves the score at South 1 - North 0 for the moment with the all important National Championship around the corner. Its definitely nice to see another team walk away with silverware and i think the Challenge format will be a real asset to the league in coming years, giving more teams something to aim for as the regular season draws to a close.

Lets see how the Predict-o-matic fared with just 4 fixtures to call:

Overall: 3-1 (75%)

You could argue that with so many close games 3 in 4 isn't a bad score. I doubt the 'Matic will see it that way, however, and no doubt will be checking and double checking his calculations for the lone matchup of week 17. Check back on Wednesday to see who he thinks will be representing the North in the National Final.

Conference Final Team Profile: Staffordshire Stallions

Last year the Stallions recorded the first perfect regular season in the teams history making it all the way to the inaugural BUAFL National Final. It was their second bowl appearance in 4 years and they have become a forced to be reckoned with in the North. Once again have strong Championship aspirations having retained most of the key players and coaching staff from last seasons campaign.

Nowhere is the Staff experience more conspicuous that on the Offensive line. Their starters have a wealth of college ball years between them and benefit from a strong understanding, having played may of these seasons together. Perennial Allstar and former GB Bulldogs Centre Pete Buckley is the bedrock of the line and also moonlights, wracking up tackles, on the defensive.

The Staffs line paves the way for a formidable running game, spearheaded by talismanic tailback Edam Goka. Goka continues to build upon an outstanding rookie season, setting and re-setting rushing records as he goes. The dynamic runningback is undeniably one of the hottest prospects in the league who's lightning speed simply carries him away from most defenders. He is also capable of cutting on a dime and shows a knack for finding running lanes. Detractors have pointed to a lack of size as a knock on his game, but is something that he will no doubt develop, especially in the BAFL summer seasons. The final piece of the Staffs rushing puzzle is George Furlong. The Great Britain FB is a superb lead blocker who also acts as the thunder to Goka's lighting contributing hard yardage. Furlonge's quickness makes him the perfect fullback for Goka as he does not have to slow his runs waiting for blocks to develop.

The Stallions aerial attack has been headed by vet Ben Rowan for the last three years during which time he has developed into a solid signal caller. The Quarterback benefits first and foremost from the Staff potent running game, taking advantage of defences overcompensating to stop the run. There aren't many QBs out there as adept at executing a play-fake as him.

The Stallions defensive units is just as grizzled as their offensive counterparts. Indeed the Dline is supplemented by a number of offensive players. This includes, notably, Buckley as well as Rob Pickerill who takes advantage of every inch of his 6ft 8 frame at Defensive end and can often be seen overwhelming opposition blockers. The linebacking core is as solid as ever and has conceded only 5 touchdowns in 9 games. This is a defence not to be taken lightly.

Conference Final Team Profile: Loughborough Aces

In their 20 year history, the Loughborough Aces have made the playoffs 17 times, boasting victories in 24 of their 38 post season games and claiming the National title 3 times. However, after the bowl defeat in 2007 and loss of the majority of their veterans, many would question whether the Aces of present still have what it takes to pose a serious threat to the BUAFL Championship.

None would dismiss that question quicker than Jason Scott. Jason, who had an illustrious playing career with the Aces between '98 and '05 took over the reigns as head coach in 2005. Since then he has set about solidifying a coaching team that includes several GB Lions players perhaps most notably Paul Sherratt, 2 time College Bowl MVP and inaugural member of the BCAFL hall of fame.

Loughborough's offence is lead by QB John Pimperton, who has gone from strength to strength under the guidance of Sherratt and gained confidence from his O-Line, the majority of which are first years. However Loughborough's offensive strength lies in it's run game which often sees tail back Yomi Okuboyejo rushing behind fellow GB Lions Sam Thompson and Patrick Harris. Loughborough's receiving corps deserves a mention with Jack Daley leading the Aces team for points, putting up double figures of touchdowns in the regular season.

The Aces defence is anchored by veteran and GB Lion Chris Peel, who's speed, size and versatility means he can make plays from any position on defence, whether it be defensive tackle or strong safety. Chris is supported by Matt Favell, another all round player adept at stopping the run. Lugbug's D-line is captained by Rob Batkin. Although small in stature, pound-for-pound Rob could very well be one of the best tackles in Conference 2. The secondary is lead by 4 year veteran Mike Thompson, who is as much of a threat coming up to stop the run as he is at defending the pass.

BUAFL Southern Final: 4 Key Questions

1.
Will Southampton's Title experience give them the edge?

Over the past few years Southampton head coach Graham Thorpe has built a model program with a winning mentality. They've taken home two of the last three national titles and carry much of this championship experience with their current squad and coaching team. In last weeks division final the Stags came through in the dying minutes to clinch the division belt. In what's bound to be another tight scrap will the Stags wealth of experience shine through and prove to be the deciding factor?

2. The Lions have yet to face a truly potent offence - will they be prepared for the Stags?

The brutal Birmingham defence has been almost impenetrable this season. They have, however, not yet faced a team with as much fire-power as the Stags hold. Duel threat quarterback Dom Olney provides a very different set of challenges to the signal callers they have contained previously and Brum will have to work hard to prevent him gaining yards in any way possible. Another interesting battle will be between the Stags undersized but explosive veteran runningback Tam Amachree and Birmingham's hulking defensive front eight. If the Lions can shut down last years league MVP the Stags game plan could start to come undone. However Southampton may be able to exploit the large but slow Birmingham linebackers by getting Tam to the edges, forcing them to over-pursue and thus open up wide cut back lanes. These two units certainly match up well and it should be a fascinating contest.

3. How will the Stags cope with the long away trip and the fact that they will be playing on grass not 3G?

Southampton have had the luxury of being able to play all their toughest games at home in the Cage, on a fast 3G surface. It will be interesting to see how the lengthy trip and change to turf will effect the Stags and especially their speedy offence.

4. Will the Stags defence be able to stifle the Lions prolific offence?

Birmingham's balanced offence has simple devastated every team they've faced so far. Even UWE's experience unit could do nothing to stem the tide of points. So do the Stags stand a chance? They certainly have the talent. The exceptional linebacking duo of Iain Anderson and Ed Wilkes rack up tackles and form the foundation of the Stags defence. Last years National Champions looks to monstrous defensive end Ed Butcher to apply pressure to the Quarterback and few teams have been able to contain him this year. The secondary is patrolled by wily vet Ben Webb who has a keen nose for the ball and is adept running it back. Will they be up to the challenge?

How important do you think these questions will be in determining the outcome of this Southern Final matchup?

BUAFL Predict-O-Matic's Week 16 Predictions

Conference
Final: UWS Pyros (8-0-1) @ Newcastle Raiders (9-0)

It goes without saying that this will be the toughest test of the year for the Pyros. Newcastle on the other hand come fresh from a shutout against UWS's neighbours Glasgow and should know exactly what the Pyros will throw at them. Just 2 games away from the Bowl, both sides will not be relinquishing the Conference title easily.

Neither outfit was particularly convincing in the 1st round of the playoffs and I suspect that both may have injury worries. It's already known that Newcastle are struggling for depth and the Pyros for experience, but this is what happens when a season runs into dissertation time. The deciding factor here is whether the high powered Newcastle offence is firing on all cylinders. On their day the Raiders O could be unstoppable and not give the Pyros a sniff. If they don't then it could be quite close.

Conference Final: Loughborough Aces (7-2) @ Staffordshire Stallions (9-0)

These 2 sides, as I predicted at the start of the playoffs, are meeting again in this Conference title clash. Loughborough started the post season with a 6-2 record, with their only 'true' loss coming against Staffs. I cant see the outcome being any different this time around. Though the Aces are a well coached, well organised outfit, the talent of the Stallions, along with the wealth of experience from last years Championship campaign, will shine through. Staffs are steaming towards their 2nd Bowl in a row and the Aces will have their work cut out trying to stop them.

Southern Final: Southampton Stags (9-1) @ Birmingham Lions (10-0)

Clash of the week in my opinion. Two fantastic programs that will more than fancy their chances of a Bowl ring if they emerge victorious here. Both have scored points for fun this year whilst refusing to return the favour to their unfortunate opponents.

Its hard to find anything to separate these powerhouse but their records against good defences may prove to be the sliver of daylight between them. Birmingham haven't skipped a beat when faced with solid defensive sides and have piled on the points. This was illustrated last week when they put 58 on UWE without breaking a sweat. In Southampton's tougher games, namely their matchups against Herts and lost at Essex, their opponents have succeeded in limiting the Stags offence to a couple of touchdowns. Having seen the vaulted Brum defence 3 times this year the Predict-o-Matic can see them holding Southampton to 2 or 3 TDs whilst the Lion roar to 30-40 points. Birmingham to cruise into the final.

Challenge Trophy Final: Sheffield Hallam Warriors (7-2) vs Bath Killer Bees (6-3)

These teams deserve something for their efforts after a gruelling season, with Hallam especially showing great improvement. Both were unlucky enough to miss out on the playoffs due to crucial losses against tough teams, so it seems like a reasonable outcome that they should meet in the Challenge Trophy final. Bath were unable to emerge from arguably the strongest division in BUAFL, Conference 3 South, which racked up a league leading 27 combined wins. Therefore despite the Warriors superior record Bath remain favourites to take home the silverware. The Bee's face a long coach journey but i think they'll ride their high powered offence to put themselves out of sight of Hallam early on.

Another week rolls past as we edge closer to the big event in Leeds....UWE simply couldn't match the Lions firepower as they roared to a 46 point victory by both air and land...The Stags/'Canes rematch was as close as billed but it was the Stags that prevailed, keeping their composure to grab the winning score deep in the fourth quarter. They now face a trip into the Den in what will be a thrilling clash of two hungry Southern powerhouses in great form.....The Killer Bees showed their class brushing Essex aside to set up a final against Hallam in the first part of this seasons answer to the eternal question "whos better: the North or the South?"....The Aces put the Sabres to the sword and now take aim at the Stallions who dumped Leeds out of the Playoffs for the third time in four years. In the regular season it was a one sided affair that finished will Staffs on top 31-8. The Aces will have revenge on their minds after their late season resurgence....The Raiders vaulted defence shut out the Tigers and face the final Scottish team standing, the Pyros, in the Conference Championship after they sent the Saints home singed. There hasn't been much talk about the Raiders since the end of the regular season so look for them to try and reignite themselves as the team to watch in North.

Lets see how the Predict-o-matic did this week:

South: 3-0
North
: 5-0
Overall: 8-0 (100%)

So everything finally clicks and the 'Matic secures the elusive 100% record! With more time to analyse each game it will be hoping to continue the streak into week 16 but will have tough time trying to separate many of the teams. Check back this Wednesday to see what it comes up with!

Conference Final Team Profile: Hertfordshire Hurricanes

The ‘Canes have a long tradition of success in British University American Football with 4 National Titles to their name. But after experiencing a mediocre few season’s Herts have re-established themselves as one of the elite BUAFL teams.

The main reason for this re-invigoration has been an exceptional crop of talented players that have come through the ranks. None typifies this more so than veteran QB Fred Boyle who has led the Canes offence for the past 3 years. Boyle has matured in the last few seasons from a bit of a gun-slinger to a polished signal caller. Although he is an adept pocket passer, Boyle is even better passing on the run where he is also a threat with ball in hand. His running ability makes him dangerous on play-action naked bootlegs and options where he can take off for long gains. The 'Canes burley offensive line tasked with protecting Boyle and opening holes in the running game excel at both.

The Herts receiving core is largely unheralded, lacking a standout receiver since Tom Shennan left last year. Although a number a receivers can often wrack up multiple catches, the primary targets who benefit from the prolific Herts aerial attack are Rob Jelly and Adrian Gums. Allstar Ed Tate is one of the best tight ends in the South, which seems to be a position less favoured nowadays as many Southern teams adopt spread offences.

Running back Issam Affoury has been a perennial Allstar the last few years and certainly ranks as on of the best at what he does in BUAFL. Affoury has an all round game and a fluid and slashing running style. He is equally adept at bowling over defenders as he is making them miss and is comfortable catching the ball. The ‘Canes Offensive captain does however appear to be injured at the moment and did not play in Greenwich game. If he does suit up for the conference final, stopping Affory will be paramount for Southampton if they want to bring the Herts high powered offence to a halt.

Fabrizio Gargiulo is the heart and soul of the ‘Canes defence leading by example from the linebacker position. The Allstar veteran is simply a playmaker who you’re equally likely to see felling a runner in the back field as you are tipping balls in coverage. Playing off Gargiulo is another Allstar Linebacker Daniel Donker as well as Nic Pucenot whilst in the secondary Hertfordshire look to Allstar cornerback Lesley Wilson to create turnovers. The ‘Canes defence matches up well with Southampton’s potent offence, who got the better of them last time. One important factor in defining their success could be who starts at Quarterback for the Stags as the mobile and elusive veteran Dom Olney provides a different challenge to pure pocket passer Nick Bee.

Conference Final Team Profile: UWE Bullets

Under the guidance of head coach Matt Dyke the UWE Bullets American Football team have now made the Playoffs in 5 consecutive seasons. After winning the National Title just two years ago UWE are looking to go all the way again but face old foes the Birmingham Lions in the Conference finals.

The nucleus of their offence is Allstar running back Mike Adams, who recently made the NFL International development squad. After spending the first two years in the shadow of Dave Egbosimba, Mike announced himself to the league in 2007 with a College Bowl MVP performance and a number of break away touchdowns in the Allstar and GB Bulldogs games. Adams is an elusive runner, capable of scoring on any given play. He displays patience and great vision with the acceleration and break away speed to match. He is also deceptively powerful and comfortable running between the tackles as well as around them. I expect the Bullets to try and get him to the edges of the big but slower Lions defence.

The Bullets Offensive line remains undersized and largely inexperience, often relying on technique over brute strength to open holes for Adams. This maybe an important factor when they come up against Birmingham's heavyweight defensive front.

Adams is complemented by a talented group of receivers. Bristol Aztec Nick Smith is one of the Best WRs in BAFL let alone BUAFL but splits his time at linebacker and has been playing banged most of the season. Possession receiver James Anderson has exceptional hands and comes fresh from a summer playing semi-pro football in Germany.

Despite the wealth of receiving talent the play of 3rd year Quarterback Ian Hugo remains inconsistent. He has all the physical assets you look for, including a cannon arm, however he tends to rush his throws and can make bad decisions, especially under pressure. Hugo is at his best when playing to his strengths, throwing deep on play action passes.

The Bullets defence recorded shut outs in all but one of their games; a flat performance against the Lions. The D is cemented with an Allstar defensive line, book-ended by GB Bulldogs, Kesav Nair and Oliver Barrett whilst the interior is manned by another formed Bulldog Dave Hughes. They will have the responsibility of getting pressure on rookie sensation QB Tristan Varney and limiting the time he has to throw.

The Bullets linebacker core is perhaps their weakest asset and includes a number of rookies. However it is sured up by time from WR Nick Smith as well as long time Bullet Kirk Dunn. Dunn's blitzes have the potential to be especially disruptive.

A play making safety partnership is completed by ball-hawking Allstar Will Parkhouse and tough tackling Gabriel Sey, another Bullets player who played semi-pro football in the summer, this time in Finland.

Conference Final Team Profile: Birmingham Lions

The Lion's program didn't skip a beat last year with the transition from Head Coach Wayne Hill to Tony Athersmith, recording a perfect regular season. They've looked even better this year with Hill back in the fold, completing another flawless regular season and remain many peoples pick for the National Title.

The Lions offensive has been defined by the meteoric rise of rookie QB Tristan Varney. After just a couple of seasons of youth football Varney has set the league alight leading Brum to the top of the BUAFL offensive rankings. He has prototypical size for a pocket QB and looks poised and capable of making all the throws. The rookie quarterbacks technique is solid with perhaps the only knock being a long wind up on deeper routes. He picked apart the Bullets defence last time around and I expect the Lions to look to do it again.

Although Varney likes to spread the ball around his top target remains veteran, Allstar WR John Zinkus. Back for one final year Zinkus is a possession type receiver with dependable hands and crisp route running. He is complemented well by deep threat Tunde Ogunlesi. Brum like to split Ogunlesi out wide where his significant height and speed advantage almost always creates a mismatch. Both these guys also act as returners on kick-off and punts. James Hancox is the third receiver in this group and has racked up 6 TDs so far this season.

Birminghams offence is balanced by Mark Smith, a power back in the mould of many previous Lions rushers. Smith does however display a burst and a second gear capable of taking him away from would be tacklers. He has scored a league leading 11 touchdowns this season and paving the way for his success is an imposing offensive line lead by OT Simon Arinze. In a league were finding stand-out Offensive Linemen is hard the Lions break from convention with five solid performers that often overwhelm smaller defences.

Brums brutish defence is solidified by mauling middle linebacker Tim Mobbs. Mobbs is a punishing run stuffer who made the seamless transition from rugby and is in and around almost every stop. Birmingham have a tendency to churn out huge line man and this year is more of the same. They have no less than 3 D-linemen who made the Southern Allstar team this season: Bessala Nyada de Besbeck, Kyle Burrows and Matthew Strong. This defensive front 8 will be focused on containing Mike Adams and must be wary not to over-pursue, especially around the fringes.

The Lions mean streak continues into the secondary where defensive Captain Greg Freeman roams alongside Safety Emir Battaloglu. Veteran GB Lion Battaloglu remains one of the best in the country, an intimidating force equally adept in coverage as he is supporting the run.

BUAFL Predict-O-Matic's Week 15 Predictions

North

PO Round 1: Glasgow Tigers (4-4) @ Newcastle Raiders (8-0)

To start with both sides are suffering injuries right now. Their last clash was a lot closer than expected and I was surprised that Newcastle seemed to show chinks in their previously infallible armour. I don't expect them to show any weakness in this rematch and with more time to plan the Newcastle defence will do the job and shut Glasgow down.

Playoff Round 1: Durham Saints (4-3-1) @ UWS Pyros (7-0-1)

Durham have not had a lot of time to psyche themselves up for this one. The decision from high above has only left them a meagre 5 days and subsequently this week could be a rush to prepare for the trip far North of the border. In contrast UWS have had perhaps to much time on their hands. But they will not want their undefeated season to end here and will give it everything they've got to be the team flying the flag for Scotland in the Conference finals.

Playoff Round 1: Leeds Celtics (6-2) @ Staffordshire Stallions (8-0)

My fellow 'Matics have told me what a great game this was last week, despite the fact that both coaches were cautious not to show their full hand. Staffs did however have the added incentive of playing for the perfect 8-0 season, and it showed. With their line back at full strength I expect them to charge and trample their way to victory. Though do not write Leeds off lightly, it will be closer than last week.

PlayoffRound 1: Loughborough Aces (6-2) @ Sheffield Sabres (7-1)

The Sabres have 'battled' their way through to the playoffs but the war has only started. Im wondering whether they've got it left in them to claim victory here. Loughborough's only proper loss came against a strong Staffs side. I say only real loss because their last against Hallam was a no contest; they took their starters off early and basically got the rest of their squad ready for the playoffs. I should have seen this coming and factored it into my equations but it seems im missing a few bolts. The Aces will come out on top to set up a rematch with the Stallions at the Stables.

Challenge Trophy Semi-Finals: Sunderland Spartans (4-3-1) @ Hallam Warriors (6-2)

Believe it or not, Sunderland may have got the real prize here in that they are only 2 wins from a possible Trophy and probably have more of a chance against the Warrior than against the rampaging Scottish Pyros who would be likely to use their heads as pigskins. Hallam are out to prove their the best team not to make the playoffs. I can see Hallam causing a major system overload for the Spartans.

South

Division Final: UWE Bullets (8-1) @ Birmingham Lions (9-0)

These two teams have been developing a fierce post-season rivalry over the past few years. Birmingham came out on top in the regular season encounter at the Den and im leaning towards the Lions again in part 2. Sure its true that Bristol were 1 of only 2 teams to put points on Brum (guess the other). But on the flip side consider that the Lions were the only side to put any points on a solid Bullets defence, and they racked up 45 of them. Its a conundrum that could mean its comes down to a shoot out and i feel Brum have the more potent offence. UWE have have scored at will against weaker sides but struggled when faced with more accomplished foes.

Conference Final: Hertfordshire Hurricanes (8-1) @ Southampton Stags (8-1)

With over 700 points scored between these two heavyweight offenses, both clearly posses a great deal of fire power. This would suggest a game where points are scored for fun, however both sides feature stingey defences capable of snuffing out the brightest offensive talents. This showed in their last meeting; just 1 week after the Stags incredible loss to Essex, they bounced back and handed Herts their sole defeat of the season so far. My circuits are telling me the win has already been decided and that the match is just a formality. The psychological advantage the Stags have from their victory, as well as the experience of winning the Championship last season, coupled with the fact that they're working overtime in preparation for the game (according to my sources) means Southampton will weather the storm.

Challenge Trophy Round Semi-Finals: Bath Killer Bees (5-3) @ Essex Blades (6-2)

A tough one. Both sides wouldn't look out of place in the playoffs and might even have had a shot to progress further. The records are where a Predict-o-Matic really has to churn it out. Though Bath are 5-3 they've defeated teams soundly, and their losses were reasonably close and to playoff teams. Essex provided the shock of the century by beating the National Champs but have been inconsistent since, often making hard work of games they should have eased though. Despite having the lesser record on paper, Bath will take this one.

Look out for profiles of the final 4 Southern teams tomorrow and Saturday here at the BUAFL Blog as we reach the business end of the season.

Sheffield Sabres (7-1) 10 v Liverpool Fury (1-7) 6
Sheffield Sabres (7-1) 30 v Lancaster Bombers (1-7) 6
Stirling Clansmen (2-5) v Sunderland Spartans (4-3) ?
Lincoln Colonials (2-5) v Derby Braves (4-3)

Although Reading had shown improvement towards the end of the season im not sure anyone was expecting them to push UWE so close. A combination of bad weather and some Bullets injuries certainly helped their cause but that shouldn't take away from an impressive turn around from their 74-0 opening day loss.....Brum snuffed out any hint of an upset against Cardiff early, and remin many peoples pick for the National Title.... The Stags and Canes also won comfortably to set up a clash of the conference 4 titans this weekend. With both teams boasting impressive lineups on either side of the ball, we will see who gains this seasons Conference bragging rights.....Hallem showed their metal putting 41 points on the Aces but will have to settle for a shot at the Challenge Cup after the Sabres took Conf 2 North. This division has proved to be a pretty formidable division this season.....The Stallions pulled away from the Celtics in the first of their back to back meetings, with more on the line in the Playoffs the rematch will only be more interesting....Finally the strange outcome of the Clansmen/Spartans game has had many up in arms with the league apparently coming together soon to decide the playoff fate of Sunderland and Durham.

Lets see how the Predict-o-matic did this week:

South - 5-1
North
- 3-1
Overall - 8-2 (80%)

Theres life in the Predict-o-matics yet it seems. Tune in to see if it can prove its metal as we come to the business end of the season. Check back this Thursday to see who it fancies as the playoffs continue in BUAFL Week 15.

BUAFL Photo Of The Week: Week 13

Another week of BUAFL fixtures in the book and another great crop of photos from the action. Taking home the silverware this week is Jason Bridges who spent Week 13 shooting the Conference 2 South clash between the Nottingham Outlaws and Lincoln Colonials. His winning shot is this beauty showing the Colonials number 86 bowling over a defender for a few extra yards:

Despite number 86's best efforts the Colonials fell to 2-5 after losing 0-20 against the Outlaws. Jason shoots regularly at Outlaws games and many other events for that matter, keeping his Flickr page frequently updated with new photos - http://www.flickr.com/photos/outlawimaging

Aces 19, Damilola Alaran, throws a wicked stiff arm in another vivid shot from Helen Kent.

This Lincoln player (who interestingly seems to be wearing a Carlstad Crusaders helmet?) looks to break free against the Outlaws D. Again from Jasons set of photos.

Last but not least Victoria Goodwin captures another great still from the action in the Outlaws/Colonials game (loads of photos from this fixture in this weeks competition!).

BUAFL Predict-O-Matic's Week 14 Predictions

South

PO Round 1: Cardiff Cobras (7-1) v Birmingham Lions (8-0)

Every circuit in my motherboard tells me this game will be the best of the bunch. With many people tipping Birmingham for the Championship title this season, it will be the first time we get a glimpse of what the Lions look like in the Playoffs. Cardiff have had a solid year and their tough tackling defence is always ready to spring a surprise. Expect Brum to try and make a statement of intent in this one.

PO Round 1: Reading Knights (5-3) v UWE Bullets (7-1)

UWE have looked good with their only slip up coming against the Lions away. In contrast Reading have run hot and cold with good wins in some fixtures and abysmal results in others. They got away with murder with not having to play Birmingham but that's football and the Knights will go into this game fresh. The Bullets will use it as a good warmup for the conference final and will rest up a number of key players carrying injuries.

PO Round 1: UEA Pirates (6-2) v Southampton Stags (7-1)

Southampton have been potent, despite their slip up earlier in the year, in their quest to retain the crown they won so convincingly last season. No matter how much I try to find the coding for UEA to win it just does not compute. Southampton are marching towards a Herts showdown where sparks should fly.

PO Round 1: Greenwich Mariners (5-3) v Hertfordshire Hurricanes (7-1)

In the regular season the Mariner's offensive production was lower that of the Destroyers and Tsunami who finished below them in Conf 3 South. They've scored only 109 points in 7 fixtures an average of around 15 points a game; thats just not a playoff calibre offence. When these 2 teams met in February, Greenwich could only muster a safty whilst Herts cruised to 44 points. That doesn't bode well for the Seamen but Herts must focus on the game in hand, and not on redeeming their loss to the Stags in the next round, to guarantee they progress.

Tarannau Aberystwyth (0-7) v BNU Buccaneers (1-6)

Aber are now officially the worst defence in the league having conceded 326 points this season. Their opponents, new boys BNU, have fared little better allowing 311 (3rd worst in the league). However the contrast comes on the offence side of the ball where Aber also rank last with just 22 points scored were as BNU have put up some points since Christmas. Despite the 55-8 loss to Reading still fresh in their minds I feel the Bucs can take this game.

North

Stirling Clansmen (2-5) v Sunderland Spartans (4-3)

After grinding out a win against Glasgow in week 13 I'm going with the Spartans. Hard to imagine that Stirling were still in the running for the play-offs after a poor season in what many say is the weakest division in BUAFL. Sunderland to show their class and composure here.

Lincoln Colonials (2-4) v Derby Braves (3-3)

Lincoln have notched up only 2 wins behind an ineffective offence and a defence that has not fared much better. Derby will be itching for a W to guarantee they finish with a winning record. Both teams have only pride to play for but Derby have the bigger incentive.

Huddersfield Hawks (3-4) v Derby Braves (3-3)

Now I don’t know whether it is this game or the game above that is taking place (i'm only a machine after all) but if it does come about its a W for Derby.

Hallam Warriors (5-2) v Loughborough Aces (6-1)

Hallam have progressed well this year but i think the class of the Aces will shine through. The only thing that could stall the win will be the tough schedule of 3 games in 7 days. Mentally and physically it would not surprise me if the players are struggling, but the Aces depth and coaching will help them to their 7th win of the season.

Leeds Celtics (6-1) v Staffordshire Stallions (8-0)

Possibly the most interesting battle of the week as these two teams may have to face each other again next week. Will both teams be gunning for the win and show their cards? Or will they both keep them close to their chest and play safe? I'm going with the Stallions and their powerful running offence here as they look for a perfect season.

Sheffield Sabres (5-1) v Liverpool Fury (1-6)

Sabres have looked impressive bar the frosty Steel Bowl hiccup. I think the Sabres give the Fury some anger management and will have this wrapped up early.

BUAFL Results: Week 13

South

Cardiff Cobras (7-1) 26 v Warwick Wolves (2-6) 0
Tarannau Aberystwyth (0-7) 0 v UWE Bullets (7-1) 61
Oxford Cavaliers (1-7) 6 v Plymouth Blitz (5-3) 14
Bath Killer Bees (5-3) 40 v Bristol Barracuda (2-6) 0
Reading Knights (5-3) v Birmingham Lions (8-0)

North

Sheffield Sabres (5-1) 30 v UCH Sharks (1-6) 0
Leeds Celtics (6-1) 14 v Huddersfield Hawks (3-4) 0
Lancaster Bombers (1-6) 12 v Loughborough Aces (6-1) 22
Durham Saints (4-3-1) 2 v Newcastle Raiders (8-0) 44
Sunderland Spartans (4-3) 12 v Glasgow Tigers (3-4) 6
Nottingham Outlaws (4-4) 20 v Lincoln Colonials (2-4) 0
Hallam Warriors (5-2) v UCH Sharks (1-6)

Bath finished the regular season on a high and now look forward to the inaugural Challenge Trophy, which they should have a great shot at winning....Cardiff did their part, soundly beating the Wolves, but unfortunately the Bullets were unphased by the long way trip to Aber, even despite breaking down in the Welsh wilderness. Cardiff now face a rested Brum side in what should be a gritty game of football....Glasgow fell in the battle of the 3-3's meaning they need a win at Stirling this week to guarentee a trip to Newcastle, who once again head into the playoffs with an unblemished record....The Celtics, Sabres and Warriors all chalked up wins this week (in one way or another) so theres still everything to play for in Conf 2 North. The Celtics/Stallions and Warriors/Ace matchups would be good games any day of the week but with so much at stake they could turn out to be epic encounters.

Let see if the Predict-O-Matic came up trumps
or if its in need of a good kicking and some oil:

North -
5-1

South - 5-0
Overall - 10-1 (91%)

It would have been nice to end the season with a perfect week, but it was Sunderland, not Nottingham, who ruined the 'Matics calculations this time around. With fewer games to call perhaps we'll see a 100% record in week 14.
